World No. 1 "Taiwanese Boxing Queen" Huang Hsiao-wen, today (16th) in the Round of 16 of the Women's 54kg category at the WB Boxing Cup China hosted by the World Boxing Association, faced the Indian opponent Poonam Poonam's constant clinching. She still managed a hard-fought 3-2 victory, successfully advancing to the quarterfinals.
Huang Hsiao-wen, currently ranked No. 1 in the World Boxing Association's Women's 54kg category, had a bye in the first round of this WB Boxing Cup China. Her first match today in the Round of 16 was against India's Poonam.
Following her usual tactics, Huang Hsiao-wen utilized her height and reach advantage, keeping distance from her opponent and scoring with jabs. However, her opponent Poonam employed a "clinching style" from the first round, constantly closing in on Huang Hsiao-wen to grapple, resulting in a 1-1 tie after the first two rounds.
In the crucial third round, Huang Hsiao-wen abandoned her conservative approach and attacked aggressively. She ultimately secured a narrow 3-2 victory with scores of 29-28, 29-28, 28-29, 27-30, and 29-28. Huang Hsiao-wen's next opponent in the quarterfinals will be the 30-year-old French boxer Wassila Lkhadiri.
Coach Liu Tsung-tai stated that Huang Hsiao-wen had not competed since the Asian Championships in April, and this first match was about regaining her feel for the competition. "The opponent's style was very clinchy, and she was a bit unaccustomed to it at first, but fortunately, she adjusted quickly."
Meanwhile, Taiwanese male boxer Peng Chia-feng, who has already qualified for the Asian Games, faced Meylis Shadurdyyev of Turkmenistan in the Round of 32 of the 55kg category today. He displayed strong determination and offensive techniques, hitting his opponent multiple times. In the third round, the opponent even made a provocative gesture with his hands down and was deducted a point by the referee.
Ultimately, Peng Chia-feng secured a smooth 5-0 victory. In the Round of 16, he will face American boxer Lorenzo Patricio, who won the U19 World Championship gold medal in 2024. (Editor: Liao Yi-ting)
