The Mainland Student Joint Admissions Committee announced the 2026 admissions guidelines for master's and doctoral programs for mainland students, offering a total of 1427 slots. Only mainland students already studying in Taiwan are eligible to apply. This year, candidates are restricted from applying to programs of the same academic system for which they have already obtained a degree, which is estimated to further reduce the number of eligible applicants.
The website of the Joint Admissions Committee for Universities and Colleges Recruiting Students from Mainland China recently announced the 2026 joint admissions guidelines for master's and doctoral programs for students from mainland China. The doctoral program offers 236 slots, and the master's program offers 1191 slots, totaling 1427 slots, a slight decrease from 2025 (1437 slots).
For doctoral programs, National Taiwan University offers the most slots with 34, followed by National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University with 26, and National Cheng Kung University with 18. For master's programs, National Taiwan University offers the most slots with 149, followed by National Cheng Kung University with 90, National Tsing Hua University with 58, and National Taiwan Normal University with 58.
According to the guidelines, the eligibility for mainland students applying for master's and doctoral programs is limited to individuals from mainland China whose registered permanent residence is in Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, Hubei, and Liaoning provinces. They must also possess a master's or bachelor's degree from a public or private university or college in Taiwan, or have equivalent academic qualifications. Applications are accepted from now until June 29, 5 PM.
China has suspended degree-seeking mainland students from studying in Taiwan since 2020. In his 2024 inaugural address, President Lai Ching-te expressed hope to restart bilateral equal tourism and academic exchanges, but the return of degree-seeking mainland students to Taiwan has not yet been restored.
Yu Zhaotang, the executive secretary of the Mainland Student Joint Admissions Committee, told CNA reporters today that currently, only mainland students already studying in Taiwan can pursue master's and doctoral degrees in Taiwan. Since the number of undergraduate mainland students has reached zero (excluding those on extended study), and this year's new restriction prohibits candidates from applying to programs of the same or lower academic system for which they have already obtained a degree (e.g., those with a master's degree cannot apply for a master's program, and those with a doctoral degree cannot apply for a master's program), it is estimated that the number of eligible applicants will be even lower than last year (612 people).
