The first-ever MLB showdown between Taiwanese pitcher and hitter saw Astros' Teng Kai-wei start and face off twice against Tigers' Li Hao-yu on the 15th. Teng struck out one, gave up one hit; he pitched 3.1 innings, gave up 3 homers and took the loss, but reached his career 100th strikeout milestone with 9 Ks in the game. Li Hao-yu had two hits and his first career stolen base.
In Major League Baseball (MLB), the Houston Astros played the Detroit Tigers, with Taiwanese pitcher Teng Kai-wei starting for the Astros.
The highlight of this game was the first-ever pitcher-hitter confrontation between Taiwanese players in MLB history. In the top of the 2nd inning, Teng Kai-wei faced Gleyber Torres. After one strike, Torres was injured and substituted by Li Hao-yu, who was then struck out by Teng's sweeper.
The two Taiwanese stars met again in the top of the 4th inning with one out. Teng Kai-wei's first pitch was hit by Li Hao-yu for a single to right field, which also led to Teng's removal from the game.
Teng Kai-wei's performance was not ideal. Although he didn't give up any hits in the 1st inning, he issued four walks and hit batsmen, giving up one run to the Tigers.
In the top of the 2nd inning, Teng gave up a solo homer to Kevin McGonigle. In the top of the 3rd with two outs, he allowed a two-run homer to Colt Keith, followed by a solo homer from Spencer Torkelson.
In the top of the 6th inning, Li Hao-yu hit a ground ball to the shortstop for an out against Astros' relief pitcher AJ Blubaugh. In the top of the 8th with one out, Li Hao-yu singled to left field off Jayden Murray and successfully stole his first career base in MLB.
Before this game, 27-year-old pitcher Teng Kai-wei had accumulated 95 strikeouts in his MLB career. His strikeout of James Outman in the 2nd inning today marked his 100th career MLB strikeout, making him the fourth Taiwanese player in MLB history to achieve this, following Chen Wei-yin, Wang Chien-ming, and Kuo Hong-chih.
Teng Kai-wei pitched 3.1 innings, throwing 81 pitches, and allowed 5 earned runs on 6 hits, including 3 home runs. He issued 4 walks and recorded 9 strikeouts. The 3 homers allowed and 9 strikeouts were both personal single-game career highs. His fastest pitch was around 152 km/h. The Astros lost the game 3-9. Teng Kai-wei took his 6th loss of the season, with his ERA now at 4.31.
Li Hao-yu went 2-for-4 in the game with two hits, one strikeout, and one stolen base. Since his return to MLB on the 14th, he has recorded a hit in both games. His batting average is now .225. (Editor: Zhong Jin-lun)
