A Mexican burrito sold at the Costco Moriyama warehouse store in Nagoya City, Japan, tested positive for Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O157, causing a food poisoning incident among consumers.
Taiwan Costco stated today (17th) that this product is not sold in Taiwan, and related similar products currently sold in stores all comply with relevant food safety standards.
Japanese media reported that the Nagoya City Health Department indicated that a total of 5 men and women, aged between 7 and 49, experienced symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal pain after consuming Mexican burritos manufactured and sold by the Costco Moriyama warehouse store between late May and early June. All of them tested positive for Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O157.
Among the affected customers, 3 were hospitalized, including a young boy who developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and is currently still receiving treatment. The Nagoya City Health Department has recognized this as a food poisoning incident and ordered the store's kitchen to suspend operations.
Taiwan Costco responded today, stating that upon investigation, Taiwan Costco does not sell the product involved in this food safety incident in Japan. Related similar products currently sold in stores all comply with relevant food safety standards.
