[Cross-Strait] MAC Spokesperson Criticizes "Chinese Citizen Contact Window"; Chiu Chui-cheng: A Common Practice Worldwide

The National Security Bureau recently announced the establishment of a "Chinese Citizen Contact Window" as an intelligence gathering channel. China's Taiwan Affairs Office stated today (17th) that the mainland strongly condemns this and will resolutely counter it, while warning Chinese citizens that providing intelligence to Taiwanese intelligence agencies will constitute a crime. Chiu Chui-cheng, Chairman of the Mainland Affairs Council, stated after a meeting of the Legislative Yuan's Internal Affairs Committee today that the MAC has no comment on the Taiwan Affairs Office's remarks. However, he added that providing a direct contact and communication window for Chinese citizens, similar to this, is a mechanism that has been in practice in various countries for many years.
Chiu Chui-cheng: "(Original sound) China is inherently an authoritarian state with extremely high internal control, making it difficult for much information to reach the outside. Therefore, agencies like the US CIA directly communicate with Chinese citizens. The CIA even has videos in Chinese appealing to citizens to directly communicate any information to the US government. Our National Security Bureau should be replicating this. Thus, relevant agencies may find appropriate channels for them to use, allowing Chinese citizens to directly contact this window. I believe this is a mechanism that has been in practice in various countries for many years."
Furthermore, regarding the Taiwan Affairs Office's mention that as long as Taiwan adheres to the "1992 Consensus" and "opposes Taiwan independence," they are willing to continue helping Taiwanese agricultural products expand their sales in mainland China, Chiu Chui-cheng responded by asking why Taiwanese agricultural imports should have political conditions or prerequisites. Political conditions imply political risks; they can be stopped or severed at any time. Such intermittent trade is a significant risk for disadvantaged Taiwanese farmers and fishermen. Haven't farmers suffered enough losses in the past? Taiwanese farmers and fishermen should not be allowed to continue falling into the trap of mainland China's united front tactics of "raising, trapping, and killing." (Editor: Shen Chen-chiang)
