The European Parliament has passed a resolution to counter transnational repression and expressed concern over the Chinese government's pressure on Taiwan-related issues. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated today (17th) that it affirms and supports the EU's strengthening of response mechanisms and will continue to deepen cooperation and exchanges in areas such as information sharing, building democratic resilience, and countering authoritarian coercion.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press release in the evening stating that the European Parliament voted on the 16th to pass the resolution "Countering Transnational Repression: Establishing EU Strategies to Safeguard European Sovereignty and Democratic Values." The resolution explores the nature, forms, and EU response strategies to transnational repression. It addresses China's use of various overseas organizations to implement comprehensive and systematic monitoring, intimidation, and forced repatriation actions, including the abuse of INTERPOL mechanisms, pressuring academia to terminate research on supply chains, forced labor, or sensitive issues like Tibet and Taiwan, and demanding artists cancel activities involving Taiwan.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the resolution calls on the EU and its member states to strengthen coordination functions and deepen cooperation with like-minded partners on legislation, victim protection, accountability, and sanctions. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes and affirms this.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that transnational repression has become a significant challenge posed by authoritarian regimes to democratic countries and civil society. It not only infringes upon freedom of speech and academic freedom as well as human rights protection but also threatens democratic systems and social resilience.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it is pleased to see the European Parliament paying attention to relevant issues and supporting the EU's strengthening of response mechanisms. In the future, it will continue to deepen cooperation and exchanges with the EU and other like-minded countries in areas such as information sharing, building democratic resilience, and countering authoritarian coercion.
