The British higher education research institution QS released the 2027 World University Rankings. This time, a total of four Taiwanese universities entered the top 200 in the world, the largest number ever. National Taiwan University achieved its best results to date, ranking 54th globally and 17th in Asia. National Taiwan University's previous best result in the QS World University Rankings was 63rd globally and 19th in Asia in the previous year. In the previous year, three Taiwanese universities entered the top 200 in the world simultaneously, but this time a total of four made it into the top 200, setting a new record. In the latest (2027) QS World University Rankings, the Taiwanese universities ranked in the top 200 are, in order: National Taiwan University (54th), National Tsing Hua University (142nd), National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (177th), and National Cheng Kung University (191st). National Taiwan University remains the only Taiwanese university to be in the "World Top 100". According to data provided by QS, the world rankings of these four universities are all their best ever; among them, National Cheng Kung University entered the top 200 in the world for the first time. Of these four universities, National Tsing Hua University saw the largest jump, improving by 34 places. Other Taiwanese universities entering the top 500 in the world include: National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (379th), National Taiwan Normal University (423rd), National Sun Yat-sen University (438th), and National Taipei University of Technology (494th). Despite the breakthrough in this world ranking, QS pointed out that among Taiwanese universities, the number of universities whose world rankings declined is still greater than those whose rankings improved, and the declines mostly occurred in the middle and lower sections of the world rankings. This time, a total of 27 Taiwanese universities were included in the rankings, with nine seeing their world rankings rise, 13 declining, and five remaining unchanged. Analyzing the performance of Taiwanese universities in various sub-indicators, QS pointed out that "Employment Outcomes" is a major strength for Taiwan; two Taiwanese universities entered the global top 100 in this indicator, with National Taiwan University performing best at 10th place, followed by National Chengchi University at 65th. QS analysis suggests that this indicates that graduates from Taiwanese universities not only possess professional skills but can also immediately enter the workforce. Industry-academia collaboration also helps provide quality career development opportunities. However, QS also mentioned that the excellent performance of Taiwanese universities in "Employment Outcomes" does not seem to have translated into outstanding "Employer Reputation" performance internationally. In this indicator, only National Taiwan University entered the world's top 100, ranking 64th. Most Taiwanese universities saw their world rankings in "Employer Reputation" decline. QS Senior Vice President Ben Sowter stated that overall, Taiwan's performance in the latest QS World University Rankings reflects Taiwan's continued investment in research and its increasing emphasis on strategic talent cultivation in its policies, with the interaction of these two measures yielding results. Taiwan's recent policy initiatives have further collaborated with universities to expand support for talent cultivation in the fields of semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), and advanced manufacturing. Sowter pointed out that the record-breaking results of Taiwanese universities in the latest world rankings indicate that policy priorities in "innovation" and "skills cultivation" are increasingly influencing the performance of universities. According to information provided by QS, the latest World University Rankings included 1,500 universities from 106 countries and regions. In the top 10 of the world rankings, the first place was taken by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, followed by Imperial College London in the UK and Stanford University in the US, tied for second place. The world rankings from fourth to seventh place are Oxford University (UK), Harvard University (US), University of Cambridge (UK), and California Institute of Technology (US), respectively. University College London (UCL) in the UK and ETH Zurich in Switzerland are tied for eighth place globally, while the National University of Singapore (NUS) ranks 10th. Among them, MIT has been ranked number one in the world for 15 consecutive years, and Imperial College London has been ranked second in the world for three consecutive years.
