The Academia Sinica held the "13th President Handover Ceremony of Academia Sinica" today (18th), with Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim and former President Tsai Ing-wen invited to attend and deliver speeches. Hsiao Bi-khim thanked the outgoing president, Liao Chun-chih, for leading Academia Sinica in promoting scientific research and development for the past 10 years, laying a solid academic foundation for Taiwan. She also congratulated the new president, Chen Chien-jen, on taking over, expressing hope that under his leadership with profound academic background and international vision, Academia Sinica will respond to emerging global challenges such as AI. #Listen to reporter Yang Wen-chun's report# During her speech, Hsiao Bi-khim pointed out that during his tenure, Liao Chun-chih was dedicated to promoting institutional and conceptual innovation, establishing three major goals: "Achieving World-Class Research," "Fulfilling Key Societal Responsibilities," and "Recruiting and Nurturing Excellent Talent," laying a stable foundation for the future development of Academia Sinica. Under his leadership, Academia Sinica participated in the creation of the first black hole image in human history and successfully showcased its self-developed 20-qubit superconducting quantum chip to the world, demonstrating Taiwan's scientific research capabilities. Vice President Hsiao stated that in his second term, Liao Chun-chih actively promoted the development of Academia Sinica's southern campus. The southern campus, officially opened in 2024, is not only an important milestone for rooting scientific research energy in the south but also a crucial hub for research in net-zero technology, quantum technology, and sustainable agriculture. It connects domestic and international academic resources, enhances the world-class frontier research capabilities of southern Taiwan, and fulfills the government's policy goals of promoting balanced regional development. Speaking of the new president, Chen Chien-jen, Vice President Hsiao said that Chen Chien-jen has long been deeply involved in public health and epidemiology research. He is an internationally renowned scholar and one of Taiwan's most important pillars during multiple public health challenges and epidemic crises. She described him as a senior whom she deeply respects and admires. She said: "(Original sound) To me, he is a respected senior, and he often makes me unable to see his taillights. Besides his position as Vice President, he has some achievements that I can only look up to from afar, not only his expertise in the field of public health academia, but also his other accomplishments that I can only admire." Vice President Hsiao stated that the world is facing multiple challenges, including extreme climate change, geopolitical shifts, supply chain restructuring, net-zero transition, and digital transformation. The rapid development of artificial intelligence also brings new issues related to ethics, regulations, and the job market. She pointed out that how to establish sound regulatory systems and ethical discussion mechanisms while technology continues to advance, providing a stable foundation for societal development, has become an important issue faced by all countries. She expects Chen Chien-jen to continue to lead cross-disciplinary integration and breakthroughs with warm and tenacious action, allowing Taiwan's academic competitiveness to continue to shine on the world stage.
