The Academia Sinica held a handover ceremony for its 13th outgoing and new president today (18th). Outgoing President Leon Chien-Chuan Liu pointed out in his speech that taking office felt like executing an 'Impossible Mission,' but it has now become 'Mission Incredible.' Former President Tsai Ing-wen thanked Leon Chien-Chuan Liu for deciding to 'come home to help' back then and emphasized, 'It's truly good to have you at home.' #Listen to reporter Yang Wen-chun's report# Academia Sinica held its presidential handover ceremony on the 18th. In his speech, outgoing President Leon Chien-Chuan Liu recalled that when he was invited back to Taiwan in 2016 to take over Academia Sinica, he faced multiple challenges including high societal expectations, intensified international scientific research competition, and the transformation of the academic environment. At the time, he even felt it was almost like the movie 'Mission Impossible.' However, completing this mission required many unknown 'Mission Invisible' behind the scenes, including long-term efforts such as institutional reform, conceptual innovation, and the transformation of research culture. Leon Chien-Chuan Liu stated that over the past decade, Academia Sinica has promoted reforms in its evaluation and promotion systems, introduced narrative-based resumes, strengthened interdisciplinary research and international cooperation, and actively deployed in cutting-edge scientific research fields such as artificial intelligence, quantum technology, and net-zero transition, as well as completing the construction of its southern campus. Looking back today, Academia Sinica has become 'Mission Incredible.' He said: '(Original sound) If taking on the presidency 10 years ago felt like a 'Mission Impossible,' then looking back today, the most gratifying aspect is seeing many tasks that were initially considered 'impossible' gradually take shape and become Academia Sinica's 'Mission Incredible.'' Leon Chien-Chuan Liu also announced that he will return to Academia Sinica's Institute of Biochemistry as a distinguished research fellow, continuing to engage in academic research and support the development of Academia Sinica in a different capacity. In her speech, former President Tsai Ing-wen recounted Leon Chien-Chuan Liu's significant achievements during his tenure. She emotionally recalled that when Leon Chien-Chuan Liu decided to return to Taiwan to take over the presidency 10 years ago, he said it was 'because something happened at home, so I'm coming home to help,' demonstrating the integrity of scholars who step up when the nation needs them. She thanked Leon Chien-Chuan Liu for his contributions over the past decade. She said: '(Original sound) So today, I want to say to President Liu, 10 years ago you said something happened at home, so you were coming home to help; 10 years later, we want to say it's truly good to have you at home. Thank you for your commitment and wholehearted dedication over the past 10 years.' Tsai Ing-wen also humorously remarked that seeing Leon Chien-Chuan Liu with gray hair now made her feel a bit guilty. She specifically asked the incoming president, Chen Chien-jen, if Leon Chien-Chuan Liu already had gray hair when he first arrived at Academia Sinica. Upon receiving the answer, 'He only had a little bit of gray hair then,' she felt even more indebted to Leon Chien-Chuan Liu. She also expressed her hope that Academia Sinica and Taiwanese society will continue to benefit from Leon Chien-Chuan Liu's involvement and assistance in the future. Regarding the incoming president, Chen Chien-jen, Tsai Ing-wen stated that Chen Chien-jen possesses not only the rigor of a scholar but also the resilience of a public servant and reassuring personal qualities. She believes that Chen Chien-jen will lead Academia Sinica with gentle yet firm strength to continue deepening research, cultivating talent, and fostering connections between research outcomes in different fields, thereby laying a more solid academic foundation for national development.
