To strengthen asymmetric drone combat power, the Army established three drone brigades in the northern, central, and southern operational zones on Taiwan's main island in April. An informed source said today (18th) that an island drone brigade will be established soon. Scholars analyze that this move can exert long-range reconnaissance and beyond-visual-range strike capabilities, greatly expanding defense and anti-landing energy. Unmanned aerial vehicles have become an important part of the national army's construction of asymmetric combat power. The Army also established a drone training center in January last year and upgraded and transformed it into a drone systems training command at the inspector general level in April of the same year. In addition, the Army completed the formation of three operational zones in April this year according to the mission characteristics and tactical applications of each region, namely the drone brigades of the 3rd Operational Zone (North), the 5th Operational Zone (Central), and the 4th Operational Zone (South). An informed source pointed out that the Army will establish a drone brigade on the outer islands in the near future to continue strengthening asymmetric combat power. In addition to extending the early warning range, it can also conduct nearby anti-blockade during wartime, and jointly establish a "kill chain" with anti-ship missiles. Minister of National Defense Chiu Kuo-cheng mentioned in a legislative inquiry in May that the country must continue to purchase drones in the future, otherwise it will become a situation of "authorized but not equipped." In addition to the Altius-600, the maritime surveillance and reconnaissance, maritime attack, and Altius-700 have not yet arrived. In this stage, training drones will be used to allow brigades to continue training. Su Tzu-yun, a scholar from the Ministry of National Defense's think tank, the Institute for National Defense and Security Research, pointed out that the establishment of a drone training command by the national army is synchronized with the US military's establishment of a drone school, symbolizing the Army's ongoing reform of modern military affairs. Among them, the addition of drone brigades on the outer islands has even more critical strategic significance. Su Tzu-yun said that drone brigades on the outer islands can exert long-range reconnaissance and beyond-visual-range strike functions, cooperate with existing garrisons on the main island and outer islands, and greatly expand defense and anti-landing energy.
