According to Japanese media reports, data released by the Japan National Tourism Organization on the 17th showed that the number of Chinese visitors to Japan in May decreased by 60.4% year-on-year, to 313,000, marking the sixth consecutive month below the same period last year. The impact of the Chinese government's call to avoid traveling to Japan continues.
According to reports from Kyodo News, Nikkei Chinese website, and others, data from the Japan National Tourism Organization shows that the number of foreign visitors to Japan in May decreased by 3.6% year-on-year, to 3,559,900, marking the second consecutive month below the same period last year.
Although Chinese tourists significantly decreased by 60.4%, tourists from South Korea, Taiwan, the Middle East, and Europe/America all increased.
According to the data, the largest number of visitors to Japan in May was from South Korea, reaching 951,300, an increase of 15.2%. Taiwan followed with 616,800 visitors, an increase of 14.6%, both setting new historical records for the same period. The third largest group was from the United States with 333,700 visits, an increase of 7.0%. China ranked fourth.
Middle Eastern travelers, who decreased in April due to the worsening situation in Iran, increased by 67.8% in May, reaching 39,000 visits. Although some countries saw a decrease due to reduced flights, the overall growth in the region was driven by the Islamic festival holiday in May. (Editor: Song Wanyuan)
