The Hong Kong Observatory issued the highest-level Black Rainstorm Warning Signal today (18th) at 12:55 PM local time (same as Taiwan time), prompting schools to suspend classes and some shops to temporarily close. The Observatory urged citizens to seek shelter and be vigilant against severe flooding.
The Hong Kong Observatory stated on its website that heavy rainfall exceeding 70 millimeters per hour is likely to continue. This is the second time this year that a Black Rainstorm Warning Signal has been issued; the first occurred on June 8th.
Influenced by active southwest monsoons and a stationary low-pressure trough, this financial center and most parts of southern China have been battered by heavy rain for consecutive days.
The Observatory indicated that strong gusts may continue to affect Hong Kong, with gusts of approximately 80 kilometers per hour recorded in Tai O in southwestern Hong Kong.
This comes on the eve of the Dragon Boat Festival on the 19th, when residents will enjoy a three-day weekend holiday, and many are expected to travel.
Authorities in Shenzhen, China, issued a Red Rainstorm Warning Signal and urged residents to stay away from low-lying areas, waterlogged areas, and what they termed "other dangerous areas."
Authorities stated that the risk of mountain floods, landslides, and other disasters has increased. (Editor: Song Wanyuan)
