A Taiwanese man surnamed Lin, suspected of being a drug manufacturing expert recruited by a drug trafficking syndicate to produce drugs in New Zealand, was arrested along with two others in New Zealand by the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Taiwan's National Police Agency in cooperation with New Zealand police. They were brought back for investigation and approximately NT$50 million worth of 20 kilograms of finished and semi-finished methamphetamine was seized. The CIB stated in a press release today (18th) that in early November last year, the Third Investigation Corps, Second Team, learned that a 53-year-old man surnamed Lin, a drug manufacturing expert, was going to New Zealand to produce drugs. A special task force was formed to investigate, and relevant information was reported to the New Zealand police. Police investigation revealed that the man surnamed Lin, who usually frequents Tainan, has a background in drug manufacturing and had been arrested and prosecuted for it before. Lin is suspected of connecting with an international drug trafficking syndicate and was recruited to produce drugs in Auckland, New Zealand. A financier provided raw materials, accommodation, and other necessities. Lin subsequently found two men to act as assistants and went to New Zealand. Police said that Lin and his accomplices flew to New Zealand in March this year. Following the CIB's notification, local police assisted in locating Lin and the others. After the task force gathered evidence for several months, on June 16th, when the time was right, searches and seizures were carried out at eight locations in Auckland, New Zealand. The police task force arrested the three Taiwanese suspects, including the man surnamed Lin, and seized 1.5 kilograms of methamphetamine, 18.5 kilograms of ephedrine and pseudoephedrine (a Class 4 controlled substance), drug manufacturing equipment, and chemical raw materials. Police estimate that this batch of drugs could yield a profit of approximately NT$50 million if successfully sold. Police believe that due to the high price of methamphetamine in New Zealand, international drug trafficking syndicates saw profit potential and recruited the drug manufacturing expert surnamed Lin to produce drugs locally, hoping to gain illicit profits through local manufacturing and sales. Lin and the other two individuals will face judicial proceedings in New Zealand and will only be repatriated to Taiwan after completing their sentences. The CIB stated that in this case, the task force focused on individuals to track down members and the source of the drug manufacturing network, and worked with New Zealand police to crack down on the crime, demonstrating their determination to prevent drugs from entering the country and to cut off the root of the problem.
