President Lai Ching-te met with the delegation at the Presidential Office today, first welcoming McBath and Foushee to Taiwan for the first time. He noted that this year marks the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, the 30th anniversary of Taiwan's direct presidential elections, and June 19th is Juneteenth, a significant celebration of human rights in the U.S. The delegation's visit at this time carries more meaning. He also took this opportunity to thank McBath, Foushee, and the U.S. Congress for their long-standing strong support for democratic Taiwan and for continuously deepening Taiwan-U.S. relations. The President stated that through the joint efforts of Taiwan and the U.S., Taiwan became the U.S.'s fourth-largest trading partner last year. In the first quarter of this year, the U.S. became Taiwan's largest trading partner, demonstrating a solid friendly relationship through close trade exchanges. Facing the current rapidly changing international situation, Taiwan will continue to strengthen its economic resilience, enhance its self-defense capabilities, and increase defense exchange and cooperation with the U.S. to jointly maintain regional peace and stability. The President also emphasized that Taiwan will continue to deepen industrial cooperation with various U.S. states. In particular, McBath and Foushee both come from major U.S. research and development hubs and have long focused on technological innovation and talent cultivation. Taiwan and the U.S. also signed a "Memorandum of Intent for the Taiwan-U.S. Semiconductor Education Alliance" last month. He hopes to combine bilateral advantages to jointly cultivate the next generation of technology talent, laying a more solid foundation for industrial development. The President said: "(Original sound) Specifically, Vice Chair McBath and Representative Foushee represent Georgia and North Carolina, respectively, both of which are hubs for new industries and technological R&D in the United States. In her speech, McBath stated that the visit of the Congressional Black Caucus to Taiwan is a tradition of the U.S. Congress.
