Hong Kong's Apple Daily was founded on June 20, 1995. Due to the impact of the National Security Law, it was forced to cease publication completely on June 24, 2021. To review the development trajectory of Apple Daily, overseas Hong Kong media "Chasing Light" and the Academia Sinica's Hong Kong Research Database are jointly holding the "Backup Apple, Record Hong Kong - Apple Daily Memorabilia Exhibition." The exhibition is now open at the Xin Futu Cultural Market until July 15. #Reported by CNR reporter Chen Nian-yi# The "Backup Apple, Record Hong Kong - Apple Daily Memorabilia Exhibition" officially opened today (19th) at the Xin Futu Cultural Market. Li Jiacong, co-founder of the organizer "Chasing Light," stated that he worked at Hong Kong's Apple Daily for over ten years and had always wanted to organize an exhibition that fully presented the 26-year development trajectory of Apple Daily. Due to the rich collection of the Academia Sinica's Hong Kong Research Database and their willingness to lend items, coupled with the enthusiastic response from Hong Kongers at home and abroad who sent him many artifacts, he eventually collected over 350 items. Li Jiacong said that after selection, this special exhibition presents the diverse aspects of Apple Daily with over 200 exhibits. He said: "(Original sound) It was very moving. Many friends knew we were organizing the Apple exhibition and provided many different things, such as even warning letters to employees. Then people say Apple is anti-communist, but Apple also had patriotic moments. During the 2004 Olympics, China won many gold medals, and Apple featured it on the front page A1, didn't expect that, right? Then during the Wenchuan earthquake, Apple's only charity sale donated that day's revenue to the people of China. Yes, so is Apple really completely anti-communist? So through these exhibitions, you can see different aspects, not just politics." In addition to presenting the development history of Apple Daily and the social changes in Hong Kong through newspapers, magazines, historical archives, and employee collections, Li Jiacong mentioned that several exciting seminars are scheduled during the exhibition. For example, as one of the founding veterans of Apple's Next Media (動新聞), he admits he doesn't fully agree with the existence of Next Media. He believes there are issues worth exploring behind Next Media, so he will share the past and present of Apple's Next Media with the audience on the afternoon of the opening day. Tomorrow and the day after, he has also invited several speakers to discuss "Apple Through the Eyes of Apple People," "The Last Days of Apple," and "Apple Daily and Hong Kong and Taiwanese Society," hoping to promote reflection on Hong Kong issues and press freedom among audiences of different generations and backgrounds.
