Regarding the "Special Regulations for the Procurement of Unmanned Vehicles for National Defense Autonomy" draft bill with a total budget of NT$210 billion passed by the Executive Yuan, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim stated today (19th) that this is a significant commitment to national security and a crucial step in deeply integrating Taiwan's industries with national defense. It will not only rapidly supplement the combat power of the national army but also build a trusted "non-red supply chain" for the international democratic camp. She hopes that political parties across the aisle can reach a consensus and jointly support this special regulation.
Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim posted on Facebook on the 19th, pointing out that the nature of modern warfare has changed, and unmanned vehicles have fully demonstrated their advantages in asymmetric warfare in actual combat. Facing increasingly complex geopolitical threats, Taiwan must keep pace with the times and build rapid response defense capabilities. However, building national defense lines cannot rely solely on a single channel of foreign military procurement. The core principle of the "Special Regulations for the Procurement of Unmanned Vehicles for National Defense Autonomy" proposed by the Executive Yuan this time is to establish the procurement principles of "large quantities, long-term orders, and iterative updates."
According to the Vice President, Taiwan possesses highly competitive technology and precision manufacturing capabilities. Through stable and long-term demand commitments, local enterprises can confidently increase investment, upgrade production lines, and expand cooperation with international industries. This can rapidly supplement the combat power of the national army, eliminate cybersecurity risks, build a trusted "non-red supply chain" for the international democratic camp, and substantially drive innovation and upgrading within domestic industrial clusters.
The Vice President pointed out that the officers and soldiers of the national army defending their homes and country on the front lines are the government's most cherished sons and daughters. The government's fundamental responsibility is to provide them with the most advanced defense tools that minimize risks. She emphasized that peace must be defended with strength, which is a common consensus in Taiwanese society today. When Taiwan demonstrates a firm will for self-defense and transforms this determination into tangible defense and industrial capabilities, international support for Taiwan will become even more solid.
The Vice President also appealed to all political parties, emphasizing that national security has never been a political issue. She hopes that political parties across the aisle can reach a consensus and jointly support this special regulation. The government will continue to communicate with all sectors of society to protect the freedom and democracy we cherish. (Editor: Chen Wen-wei)
