The KMT's Culture and Communications Committee stated today (19th) through a press release that KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wen accepted an interview with foreign media. Cheng Li-wen stated that the KMT pursues peace but will never give up self-defense. The KMT opposes Taiwan declaring legal independence, but if Taiwan does not declare formal independence and mainland China still decides to invade Taiwan with force, "we will fight, we will definitely retaliate." The KMT's Culture and Communications Committee issued a press release today stating that Cheng Li-wen was interviewed by "The Economist" on the 17th. She said that Taiwan should not be a tool for any negotiation or transaction; Taiwan should not be a bargaining chip in any major power competition or negotiation. Instead, it should continue to deepen exchanges and cooperation with the United States and the international community, while reducing conflict risks through dialogue, and jointly working for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region. Cheng Li-wen stated that the results of her visit to the US exceeded expectations, and she sternly denied Taiwanese media reports that US national security officials had canceled their originally scheduled meeting with her. During her visit to the US, she had extensive exchanges with 10 US congressional members, government officials, think tank scholars, and overseas Chinese representatives from all walks of life. Although she did not succeed in persuading all parties in the exchanges, the KMT has established new communication channels with the US side and will continue to explain to the international community in the future that cross-strait differences should be resolved through peaceful dialogue. Cheng Li-wen pointed out that she clarified many external misunderstandings about the KMT's cross-strait policy and defense stance to various parties in the US, allowing more friends to have a more comprehensive understanding of the KMT's philosophy of simultaneously maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, dialogue, and self-defense. Cheng Li-wen stated that the KMT opposes Taiwan declaring legal independence, a point consistent with the stance of Chinese President Xi Jinping. "But if Taiwan does not declare formal independence, and mainland China still decides to invade Taiwan with force, we will fight, we will definitely retaliate." Cheng Li-wen pointed out that the KMT may soon propose legislation on domestic drone manufacturing plans and other measures to enhance Taiwan's defense industry capabilities. However, even if the KMT proposes new plans, given the progress of legislative review in the Legislative Yuan, it is unlikely to be passed before Xi Jinping's visit to the US in September. Cheng Li-wen stated that the KMT pursues peace but will never give up self-defense. Maintaining peace in the Taiwan Strait is safeguarding Taiwan's democracy, freedom, and rule of law. Only in a peaceful and stable environment can the safety and well-being of the people be ensured. In the future, the KMT will continue to maintain close exchanges with the United States and the international community, enhance mutual understanding and trust, and allow more international friends to understand the KMT's firm stance in safeguarding the security of the Republic of China, peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and regional prosperity.
