In the women's 60kg quarterfinals of the Boxing WB Cup China Station held by the World Boxing (WB) today (19th), "Daughter of Taiwan" Lin Yuting faced the World Championship gold medalist, Brazilian star Rebeca Santos, and won decisively with a 5-0 score, successfully advancing to the top 4 and securing at least a bronze medal.
Today is the Dragon Boat Festival, and while the athletes are competing abroad, Lin Yuting's coach, Zeng Ziqiang, humorously consoled himself, saying, "We don't have zongzi to eat, but we're here to get seeds (for the Asian Games)."
The WB Cup China Station is taking place in Guiyang. Taiwan sent 2 male and 4 female athletes, but by today, only Lin Yuting in the women's 60kg and Wu Shiyi in the women's 57kg were competing in the quarterfinals.
This is Lin Yuting's second international competition after transitioning to the 60kg class following her gold medal win at the Paris Olympics. The previous one was the Asian Championships in April, where she reached the semifinals and won a bronze medal.
Today, Lin Yuting faced the 2022 World Championship gold medalist, Brazilian star Santos. In the first round, the match was quite close, with Lin Yuting leading only 3-2.
However, from the second round onwards, Lin Yuting gradually gained control of the rhythm and offense. Additionally, Santos received a warning and a point deduction from the referee, becoming increasingly agitated. Lin Yuting remained calm, executing her game plan. By the end of the second round, she had completely dominated with a 5-0 score.
In the third round, Lin Yuting maintained her rhythm, mostly employing counter-attacks, and ultimately secured the victory steadily. This marks her second time reaching the semifinals since the Asian Championships. Her next opponent will be the 31-year-old Chinese star Yang Chengyu, who won gold at the 2023 World Championships.
Zeng Ziqiang stated after the match that Lin Yuting is gradually regaining her feel for major competitions. After the first round today, she performed very well in terms of rhythm and control, "effectively limiting the opponent's offense and successfully executing her planned tactics."
Zeng Ziqiang revealed, "Originally, Yuting had a speed advantage in the 57kg class. After moving up to 60kg, she has been facing stronger opponents. This aspect needs further improvement in dealing with them." In the upcoming semifinals, Lin Yuting will face China's Yang Chengyu, who is not only the 2023 World Champion but also the primary rival for the gold medal at this year's Nagoya Asian Games.
Meanwhile, Wu Shiyi lost to Indian athlete Prachi Prachi 1-4 today, failing to advance to the semifinals. (Editor: Zhong Jinlong)
