The 30th session of the 3rd joint meeting of directors and supervisors and the general assembly of the Federation of Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce in Central and South America kicked off in Sao Paulo, Brazil, from the 19th to the 21st. On the evening of the 19th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted a banquet to welcome 200 representatives of Taiwanese businesspeople, overseas Chinese leaders, and young business leaders from 19 countries in Central and South America, creating a lively atmosphere.
Distinguished guests included Hsu Chia-ching, Chairperson of the Overseas Community Affairs Council; Liao Chih-hsien, Representative to Brazil; Chu Yi-ching, Director-General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Sao Paulo; Yu Cheng-tsai, Director of the Cultural Division; and Yang Kuo-hsien, Advisor to the Executive Yuan.
Liao Chih-hsien stated in his speech that Latin America is a land full of vitality and potential. Taiwanese businesspeople have crossed half the globe to take root here, overcoming language barriers and cultural differences, and demonstrating resilience amidst drastic changes in the global economic and trade environment.
He emphasized that Taiwanese businesspeople, with the spirit of Taiwan, have created magnificent businesses, not only bringing glory to Taiwan but also serving as important drivers for local economic development and employment.
Liao Chih-hsien echoed the concept of "everyone is a diplomat" by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung, pointing out that Taiwanese chambers of commerce are Taiwan's most important non-governmental diplomatic force in Latin America. Whether promoting bilateral trade and economy, participating in public welfare and charity, or supporting Taiwan's accession to international organizations, Taiwanese businesspeople have always been at the forefront, allowing the world to see Taiwan's kindness and strength.
Director-General Chu Yi-ching of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Sao Paulo emphasized in her speech that overseas Chinese are "super teammates" in diplomacy. Taiwanese businesspeople have not only achieved success in their careers abroad but have also promoted the integrity and innovative entrepreneurial spirit of Taiwanese people, actively assisting the government in promoting people-to-people diplomacy in their host countries, becoming a strong backing for Taiwan to go global. Chu Yi-ching thanked the overseas Chinese community for their long-term support of government policies, which has broadened Taiwan's international space, and expressed hope that this conference will spark more cooperation.
Chairperson Hsu Chia-ching of the Overseas Community Affairs Council humorously expressed her dilemma of "who to support" by citing the World Cup football match that evening between Brazil and Haiti, a diplomatic ally of Taiwan. She pointed out that although football is not Taiwan's national sport, overseas Chinese participate in various ways around the world, demonstrating the strength of the "Taiwan team" in economics, culture, technology, and healthcare. She emphasized that overseas Chinese are Taiwan's representative team, allowing the world to see Taiwan through their various efforts.
Federation President Lin Hsing-chao stated in his speech that he thanked Taiwanese businesspeople from various regions for gathering in Sao Paulo from afar, demonstrating the cohesion and unity of the big Taiwanese business family. He pointed out that Brazil is a country of football, and samba is the rhythm of the heartbeat. This annual meeting coincided with the World Cup, filling the streets with cheers, symbolizing the passion and vitality of Brazilian Taiwanese businesspeople. He hoped that the attendees would feel the enthusiasm of Brazilian overseas Chinese and the deep affection and pride of the overseas Chinese community for Taiwan.
The event was a great success, with all attendees hoping that this grand assembly would unite the strength of the overseas Chinese community and create a broader future for Taiwanese businesses and Taiwan's overseas development. (Editor: Liu Hsiang-hua)
