[Politics] US Invites Han Kuo-yu to Visit; Joseph Wu: Washes Away Cheng Li-wen's Impression of Taiwan Being Pro-China

Legislative Yuan Speaker Han Kuo-yu led a delegation to visit the United States on the 21st. Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Wu pointed out that the US invited the Speaker of Taiwan's legislature to lead a cross-party delegation of legislators to visit. He believes that the US arrangement is also to wash away the impression left by KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wen's visit to the US that Taiwan supports "One China," allowing the majority opinion of Taiwan to be presented in US public opinion, which is also positive for Taiwan-US relations.
Joseph Wu was interviewed by Liu Fang-ci, host of Formosa TV's "News Observation Station," a program broadcast this afternoon (20th).
Regarding Cheng Li-wen's remarks during her US visit that Chinese President Xi Jinping is the best person in the world for Taiwan, Joseph Wu stated, "A 'terrorist lover' might also feel very good to you." He added that China is a country that bullies Taiwan, and while Xi Jinping loves Taiwan and wants to 'devour' it, he has controlled China for over a decade, and his verbal and military threats against Taiwan have only increased. Such statements are not only inconsistent with facts but also represent China's unscrupulous tactics.
Joseph Wu said that Cheng Li-wen's claim that Xi Jinping has goodwill towards Taiwan and felt wronged by being misunderstood is incredible. He emphasized that in reality, only Taiwanese people can decide their own future and live without Chinese rule. He warned against reversing cause and effect: if China threatens Taiwan, yielding to China naturally avoids violence, but resisting will lead to violent coercion. The international community sees this clearly, which is also why the international reaction to Cheng Li-wen's US visit was generally negative.
Joseph Wu pointed out that the US understands Taiwanese public opinion well. Due to the sabotage of the National Defense Authorization Act by Cheng Li-wen and a few others, budgets for drones and other items were cut. Therefore, the US Congress invited Han Kuo-yu during the session to lead a cross-party delegation of legislators to visit the US. Although Han Kuo-yu is from the KMT, leading a cross-party delegation can present a moderate stance and represent the majority opinion of Taiwan.
Joseph Wu believes that this arrangement by the US is, to some extent, intended to wash away the impression left by Cheng Li-wen's visit that Taiwan supports "One China," the "1992 Consensus," and opposes Taiwan independence. It allows Taiwan's true majority opinion to be presented in US public opinion, which will also have a positive impact on future Taiwan-US relations.
Speaking about his vision during his tenure, Joseph Wu stated that Taiwan-US relations are currently on the right track and are of utmost importance. Issues such as arms sales and tariffs are being resolved sequentially, and Taiwan-US investment is creating a reliable supply chain, fostering a symbiotic partnership. Secondly, in addition to maintaining diplomatic relations with allies, Taiwan can also establish diplomatic relations or representative offices with special diplomatic privileges with other countries. He also plans to integrate his past experience in grassroots work and industry relations into a "comprehensive diplomacy" policy, making Taiwan a country respected and liked by the international community.
