To promote the results of the second Sustainable Development Book and Material Selection, and to foster exchange and practice in the fields of publishing, education, and reading promotion for sustainable development, the National Taiwan Library (NTL) and the Tianyu Environmental Sustainability Foundation jointly organized the "Sustainable Development Book and Material Reading Handbook: Climate Change and Biodiversity" launch and a forum on new trends in sustainable development. It is hoped that through the integration of reading resources and cross-domain cooperation, the public's sustainable literacy will be further enhanced. #Please listen to reporter Yang Yu-ching's report# Cao Cui-ying, Director of the NTL, stated that this selection attracted 77 publishers and 1,588 works. Ultimately, 120 excellent books were chosen, possessing knowledge, readability, and inspirational action. These books cover picture books, comics, illustrated books, and text books suitable for different age groups from 0 to 15 years old. The books are classified according to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and serve as a practical guide for teachers, parents, librarians, and reading promoters in fostering shared reading and teaching design. In addition to integrating global climate and environmental issues, the selected works also cover Taiwanese native species, marine ecology, and local culture. Cao Cui-ying also pointed out that in the AI era, reading cannot be ignored. It can guide children in diverse ways, with a sense of play and fun, allowing the new generation to experience the beauty of reading. She said: "(Original sound) We not only need to utilize AI, but we also need to understand how to apply it. More importantly, we must not let children become dependent on AI or blindly follow it. Because it is a multicultural society, it is a society with different roles and functions. Through reading and learning, children truly need to have very good experiences and feelings." Yeh Chia-ching, Chief Advisor of the Tianyu Environmental Sustainability Foundation, stated that reading is an important starting point for cultivating children's understanding of environmental and sustainability issues. The foundation continues to support the promotion of sustainable reading, hoping to guide children to establish values of caring for the environment and respecting life through reading high-quality selected books and diverse reading activities, and to implement sustainable concepts into daily life. Facing challenges such as global climate change and biodiversity loss, the NTL stated that reading is not only a medium for knowledge transmission but also an important pathway for cultivating sustainable awareness and action. The NTL will continue to work with partners from all sectors to deepen the development and promotion of sustainable reading resources, connect the strengths of libraries, schools, and communities, and jointly build a sustainable learning network for public participation. This will allow sustainable development concepts to be integrated into practical life, take root and grow in the hearts of the next generation, and become a key force in promoting social progress and environmental well-being.
