The TPP caucus in the Legislative Yuan recently proposed extending the current legislative session until July 31 of this year. With a majority, the KMT and TPP pushed the proposal directly to a second reading, but no consensus was reached after cross-party negotiations. Following the Legislative Yuan's plenary session on the 15th, the TPP caucus submitted a revised motion to extend the session until August 31. Leveraging their majority, the KMT and TPP successfully passed the resolution to extend the session until August 31.
The Legislative Yuan holds two sessions annually, convening on its own. The statutory periods are from February to the end of May, and from September to the end of December, with the possibility of extension as required by law. On April 10, the TPP caucus proposed that President Lai Ching-te and Premier Cho Jung-tai have been negligent in their duties, failing to submit nominations for vacancies such as Judicial Yuan Justices and NCC commissioners to the Legislative Yuan for review. Furthermore, texts such as the 'US-Taiwan Initiative on 21st-Century Trade (ART)' and the 'US-Taiwan Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)' have not yet been submitted to the legislature for review in accordance with the 'Act Governing the Conclusion of Treaties.' To ensure sufficient time for the Legislative Yuan to rigorously review personnel consent cases, the general budget, and the ART and MOU, they proposed extending the session until July 31.
