The sunny weather during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday will continue to be strong until next Wednesday! The Central Weather Administration announced today (21st) that affected by Typhoon "Mekala" gradually moving north from the waters east of Taiwan from the 24th to 26th, the weather across the island will become unstable, and there is still a possibility of issuing a sea warning. #CNA reporter Wu Lijun reports#
During the three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday, under the influence of the Pacific high pressure, the weather across Taiwan will be clear and hot, with temperatures generally reaching 33-36 degrees Celsius. In the Greater Taipei area, areas near mountains in central and southern Taiwan, and the East Rift Valley in Hualien and Taitung, local high temperatures may even soar above 36 degrees Celsius. The Weather Administration predicts on the 21st that this scorching weather will continue until next Wednesday, the 24th, before it is expected to cool down slightly.
The key to the change in weather is Typhoon No. 7, "Mekala," which formed early on the 20th. It is currently moving from the west of Guam towards the Philippines and is expected to strengthen into a moderate typhoon on the 22nd. It will gradually turn north on the 23rd and slowly move north from the waters east of Taiwan from the 24th to 26th. Fortunately, during this northward movement, "Mekala" will encounter wind shear caused by a low-pressure system to the north, which will be unfavorable for its continued development, and its intensity may weaken slightly.
However, the Weather Administration has not ruled out the possibility of issuing a sea typhoon warning at that time. Weather forecaster Liu Peiteng said: "(Original sound) So, its current northward position is about 300-400 kilometers away from Taiwan, still a certain distance. However, this mainly depends on the strength of the Pacific high pressure in the future. If the Pacific high pressure is stronger, it has a chance to move closer to Taiwan. Therefore, it cannot be said that the probability of a sea warning is completely zero, but currently it appears to be low."
Despite this, starting next Wednesday, all areas should be aware of the rainfall brought by the outer bands of the typhoon. In particular, Hualien and Taitung will have a chance of scattered showers from the 24th, and southern Taiwan will experience some localized thunderstorms in the afternoon. On the 25th and 26th, affected by the counter-clockwise circulation of the typhoon's outer bands bringing westerly to northwesterly winds, western and eastern Taiwan, and Yilan will also experience intermittent rain. Hualien and Taitung will mainly have afternoon thunderstorms. Under the influence of the typhoon's outer circulation, high temperatures across the island are expected to drop slightly to 33-34 degrees Celsius.
It is important to note that although "Mekala" is expected to gradually move away from the 27th, it will be affected by the residual moisture from the typhoon. Additionally, the plum rain front extending from southern China will approach Taiwan slightly, and the moisture from the southwest monsoon will still be near Taiwan. Therefore, all areas should remain vigilant about afternoon thunderstorms. Furthermore, as "Mekala" will be south of the Ryukyu Islands on the 26th, attention should also be paid to whether flights to and from Okinawa will be affected. (Editor: Song Wanyuan)
