The 2026 Kaohsiung Dragon Boat International Friendship Race kicked off today (21st), with teams from the city government, the US, Japan, and others competing. The city government team also invited Minister of Sports Lee Yang as 'reinforcement' and popular cheerleader An Zhi-xuan as the drummer, fulfilling expectations by winning with a time of 2 minutes and 04.70 seconds.
The "2026 Kaohsiung Dragon Boat Carnival and Dragon Boat Championship International Friendship Race" took place this afternoon at Love River, with international representatives including the American Institute in Taiwan's Kaohsiung Branch, the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association's Kaohsiung Office, and the Manila Economic and Cultural Office's Kaohsiung Branch all forming teams to participate.
Among them, the "Kaohsiung Team" formed by the city government, the "AIT Kaohsiung Team" from the American Institute in Taiwan's Kaohsiung Branch, the "Japan-Taiwan KIZUNA Dragon Boat Team A" from the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association's Kaohsiung Office, and the "International Team" composed of international friendly cities competed together in four teams.
The "Kaohsiung Team," led by Mayor Chen Chi-mai, specially invited Lee Yang to be a team member this year and asked An Zhi-xuan to be the drummer, competing alongside teams from various countries. Chen Chi-mai told the media before the race that he was confident of winning, especially with the 'Golden Medal Minister' Lee Yang joining the team, implying they would definitely win gold.
Chen Chi-mai said that the city government team had actually been practicing secretly for a long time, training hard, and with Lee Yang's support and An Zhi-xuan as the drummer, "So there's no problem, we are deeply confident."
Lee Yang jokingly told the media, "Originally, I didn't feel that much pressure, but with the mayor saying that, the pressure is quite high now. I just told the city government team that I hope I don't drag them down too much."
After the race began, the Kaohsiung Team, with Lee Yang's boost, indeed took the lead all the way. Lee Yang and the city government officials' synchronized rowing movements gradually widened the gap with other teams, and they finally crossed the finish line first.
The final results showed the Kaohsiung Team winning with 2 minutes and 04.70 seconds, the AIT Kaohsiung Team taking second place with 2 minutes and 14.30 seconds, the Japan-Taiwan KIZUNA Dragon Boat Team A coming in third with 2 minutes and 22.01 seconds, and the International Team fourth with 2 minutes and 33.91 seconds.
