"King of Cats" Tang Jiayang today (21st) won the gold medal in the men's horizontal bar final at the 2026 Asian Gymnastics Championships with a high score of 15.500, completing his consecutive victories. In total, the Taiwanese delegation won 1 gold and 2 bronzes this year and secured a spot in the World Championships, making coach Lin Yuxin laugh and say: "Nearly perfect."
The 2026 Asian Junior and Senior Gymnastics Championships were held in Guizhou, China, from June 18th to 21st. The Taiwanese men's delegation sent their best athletes. In the team competition on the first day, Tang Jiayang, Li Zhikai, Hong Yuanxi, Zhuang Jialong, and Xiao Youran teamed up to secure 5th place, successfully obtaining a ticket to the World Championships in October.
Next, in the individual event competition on the 20th, "Prince of Pommel Horse" Li Zhikai won a bronze medal, marking his first Asian Championships medal. On the second day of individual events today, Hong Yuanxi, who competed first, secured the team's second bronze medal in the men's parallel bars with a difficulty score of 5.700, an execution score of 8.100, and a total score of 13.800.
The highly anticipated men's horizontal bar final featured 8 participants, with 7 competing. Tang Jiayang was the 7th to perform. Before him, China's Zhang Boheng was temporarily in the lead with a score of 15.000.
Tang Jiayang increased his difficulty score from 6.000 in the preliminaries to 6.600 in the finals. Under pressure, Tang Jiayang completed his routine with near-flawless, fluid connections, perfectly winning the gold and defending his title. The silver and bronze medals went to China's Zhang Boheng and Japan's Maede Kaede, respectively.
Lin Yuxin stated that the team's consensus for this competition was to first secure qualification for the World Championships. "Seeing veteran athletes Li Zhikai and Tang Jiayang fight so hard was truly moving, and we achieved our goal of a top 5 finish."
Regarding individual events, Lin Yuxin mentioned, "Li Zhikai has finally broken through after a two-year plateau; Hong Yuanxi's parallel bars performance was also impressive, with significant room for improvement; Tang Jiayang's strength goes without saying, he is already a world-class athlete, and today he performed as expected under pressure."
