Due to weather forecasts predicting extreme high temperatures in Madrid, the Spanish capital, authorities announced today (21st) that the outdoor broadcast of the World Cup match between Spain and Saudi Arabia, originally scheduled for the evening, has been canceled. The Group H second-round match between Spain and Saudi Arabia was scheduled to kick off at 6 PM local time on the 21st (midnight on the 22nd Taiwan time). It was originally planned to be broadcast live on a large screen set up by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) in Madrid's central Plaza de Colon for the fan zone. After the Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) issued a second-highest level orange high-temperature alert for the Madrid region, predicting temperatures to reach 40 degrees Celsius, the Madrid City Council and the football federation decided to cancel the broadcast event. The Madrid City Council stated in a release: "This decision was made to protect the health of spectators, event staff, and related support service personnel," and apologized for any inconvenience caused. Officials urged fans to watch the match in air-conditioned indoor spaces and avoid prolonged exposure to high temperatures. With a mass of hot air from North Africa crossing the Iberian Peninsula, many parts of Spain are experiencing an unusually hot June. Thirteen out of Spain's 17 autonomous communities issued orange high-temperature alerts today, while the northern Basque Country, bordering France, issued the highest level red high-temperature alert. Authorities advised residents and tourists to take protective measures during the heatwave, including staying hydrated, remaining in cool environments, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, and paying special attention to vulnerable groups.
