On the second day of the 2nd Asian Relays Championships held in Shaoxing, China, the Taiwanese men's representative team, consisting of Lai Po-hsiang, Chen Wen-pu, Huang Tso-chun, and Ko Wu-yen-ming, achieved a new national record of 38.41 seconds in the 4x100m final today (21st), clinching the bronze medal.
At the New Taipei City International Athletics Open in early June this year, Taiwan's Asian Games training team ran 38.80 seconds in the men's 4x100m timed final, just 0.04 seconds shy of the national record of 38.76 seconds. The members at that time were Lai Po-hsiang, Chen Wen-pu, Huang Tso-chun, and Lin Po-hsun.
Today at the 2nd Asian Relays Championships, the Taiwanese team members were slightly changed, but achieved better results, successfully breaking the national record and winning the bronze medal. The gold and silver medals went to China with 38.08 seconds and Thailand with 38.28 seconds, respectively.
Head coach Yi Wei-chen, who was also one of the former national record holders for Taiwan's 4x100m relay, said, "We already had a sense of it at the New Taipei City International Athletics Open. This time, we just slightly adjusted the precision of each person's handoff points in the exchange zone."
Yi Wei-chen mentioned that in such a short period, adjusting individual techniques and form doesn't have much effect. Another key to relays is the chemistry of the baton exchange and matching the handoff points. "So we particularly emphasized this point this time, and I'm very happy the athletes achieved it."
Yi Wei-chen revealed that Yang Chun-han also accompanied the team to China for preparation. "However, due to a recurrence of an old Achilles tendon injury during the New Taipei City International Athletics Open, he didn't compete as a precaution. But if he recovers well, he will definitely be a member of the relay team for the Nagoya Asian Games."
Upon hearing the news, Yeh Cheng-yen, Chairman of the Chinese Taipei Athletics Association, immediately awarded prize money for breaking the national record: NT$20,000 for each athlete and NT$40,000 for coach Yi Wei-chen, as encouragement. (Editor: Hsu Chia-yuan)
