According to AFP, Colombia held its presidential election runoff on the 21st, and official results show that far-right presidential candidate Abelardo de la Espriella took an early lead as votes were counted. This crucial election will reshape Colombia's fragile peace process and its relationship with the United States. The results are expected to be announced around 6 PM local time (7 AM on the 22nd, Taiwan time). According to data from the National Registry, with over 89.58% of polling stations counted, lawyer de la Espriella, supported by the White House, secured 50.1% of the vote, leading left-wing senator Ivan Cepeda's 48.25%. Security issues dominated the campaign, with guerrilla groups launching bomb attacks during the election period, candidates receiving hundreds of threats, and a conservative presidential candidate being murdered in broad daylight in Bogota. Colombia, a South American nation, held its presidential election on May 31st. As no candidate secured more than half the votes, the top two candidates, de la Espriella and Cepeda, proceeded to a second-round runoff on June 21st. De la Espriella, a lawyer and businessman with no prior public office experience, is a political newcomer and a supporter of U.S. President Donald Trump and his deadly attacks on so-called "narco-terrorism" in the Caribbean. Meanwhile, Senator Cepeda, 63, has pledged to seek peace with illegal armed groups through negotiation and plans to deepen reforms to reduce inequality and poverty, including raising taxes on high earners, granting 1 million hectares of land to victims of Colombia's 60-year civil war, and expanding healthcare coverage.
