The 2026 World Middle School Basketball Championship was held in Serbia. The Taiwanese women's basketball team, which reached the finals for the first time, battled China until the last moment today (22nd), unfortunately losing 66-76. However, the runner-up position still set the best record in the team's history.
Led by head coach Li Tai-ying, the Taiwanese women's basketball team advanced from the group stage as the top seed. In the knockout stage, they successively defeated the Czech Republic, the United States, and Turkey, achieving the milestone of reaching the finals for the first time in team history. Today, they faced China head-on. Although they were still closely trailing after the first three quarters, they were unable to stage a comeback in the decisive fourth quarter, ultimately losing by 10 points.
Facing the taller Chinese team, the Taiwanese women's basketball team struggled from the start of the first quarter, especially with their outside shots being restricted, entering halftime with a 13-point deficit. However, after halftime, the Taiwanese team sounded the counterattack horn. Thanks to Lin Nien-chen's consecutive three-pointers, scoring 12 points in the quarter, and Xu Yu-shan maintaining good form, they managed to tie the score at one point.
Even though they were hit with a 7-0 run by the opponent at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Taiwanese women's basketball team did not give up easily. Chang Yu-tung and Chen Rou-an successively hit three-pointers, helping the team stay close. Unfortunately, their offensive momentum could not be sustained, causing the Taiwanese team to narrowly miss the championship trophy. However, securing the runner-up position still marked the best record in the team's history. (Editor: Liu Hsiang-hua)
