Houston Astros Taiwanese pitcher Teng Kai-wei of Major League Baseball made an appearance today (21st), delivering a quality start with 6 innings and 1 run allowed, leading his team to a 2-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians, ending his recent 3-game losing streak in starts and securing his 4th win of the season.
Teng Kai-wei, a 27-year-old Taiwanese pitcher, started against the Guardians today. In the top of the 1st inning, he allowed hits to Travis Bazzana and Brayan Rocchio. Due to a wild pitch, runners advanced to second and third base. He quickly regained composure, striking out the third batter to end the inning without allowing a run.
In the top of the 2nd inning with two outs, Teng Kai-wei issued a walk, then induced a ground ball out, preventing the opponent from continuing their offense. In the top of the 3rd inning with one out, he allowed a hit to Kyle Manzardo, then sequentially got batters to hit ground balls towards first base and fly balls to right field, freezing the opponent's offense.
Teng Kai-wei retired the Guardians batters in order in the top of the 4th inning. In the top of the 5th inning with one out, he allowed a triple to Petey Halpin, then gave up 1 run due to a ground ball, but did not escalate the scoring crisis. He continued to pitch in the 6th inning, retiring the opponents in order before exiting the game after 6 innings.
Stuart Fairchild, a Taiwanese-American mixed-race player for the Guardians, did not start today. He came up to bat as a pinch hitter in the top of the 7th inning and drew a walk, missing the chance to face Teng Kai-wei at the plate.
The Astros scored first in the bottom of the 1st inning with a solo home run by Yordan Alvarez. In the bottom of the 4th inning, they added another run through a walk and consecutive singles by Christian Walker and Isaac Paredes, ultimately securing a 2-1 victory.
Teng Kai-wei threw a total of 83 pitches over 6 innings today, with a top speed of 152 km/h. He allowed 4 hits, struck out 4 batters, issued 1 walk, and gave up 1 earned run, earning his 4th win of the season. His ERA after the game was 4.03. (Editor: Chen Wen-wei)
