The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's Environmental Department and the Thai Meteorological Department issued a high-temperature warning on the 25th, stating that Bangkok's Heat Index has reached a maximum of 51.9 degrees Celsius, entering the "Dangerous" level. They reminded the public, especially between 11 AM and 3 PM, to avoid prolonged outdoor activities to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke, and urged high-risk groups to be extra vigilant.
Officials stated that the heat index is not the actual temperature but a measure that combines air temperature and relative humidity to reflect the perceived temperature felt by the human body. When humidity is high, the body's ability to dissipate heat through sweating decreases. Even if the actual temperature is only in the 30s Celsius, it can feel like over 50 degrees Celsius, making the heat index an important basis for assessing heat-related injury risks.
According to the latest monitoring data, Bangkok's heat index has reached 51.9 degrees Celsius, classified as "Dangerous" by the government. Officials also announced a four-level heat index alert system:
1. 27.0 to 32.9 degrees Celsius is the "Caution" level, advising increased fluid intake and attention to high-temperature information.
2. 33.0 to 41.9 degrees Celsius is the "Warning" level, recommending reduced outdoor activities between 11 AM and 3 PM, and seeking medical attention promptly if feeling unwell.
3. 42.0 to 51.9 degrees Celsius is the "Dangerous" level, requiring close monitoring of one's physical condition and immediate medical assistance for any abnormal symptoms; above 52 degrees Celsius is the "Extreme Danger" level, necessitating complete avoidance of outdoor activities.
Health authorities pointed out that high temperatures can cause symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, heat rash, swelling of limbs, and muscle cramps. If not cooled down in time, it can further lead to heatstroke, which can be life-threatening in severe cases.
Officials also reminded eight high-risk groups, including children under 5, the elderly over 60, pregnant women, individuals with chronic illnesses, the obese, those who consume alcohol, people working outdoors for extended periods such as motorcycle taxi drivers, delivery personnel, and construction workers, as well as those engaging in outdoor sports or travel activities. They should pay special attention to staying hydrated, avoiding direct sun exposure, and taking adequate rest.
To help the public cope with the heat, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has set up several "Heat Escape Rooms" for citizens to rest and cool down during high-temperature periods. People can check real-time heat index data and cooling locations via LINE or the AIR BKK application. In case of heatstroke or emergency physical discomfort, call the 1669 emergency medical hotline for assistance. (Editor: Chung Chin-lung)
