Hello everyone, the Dragon Boat Festival is approaching. Did you know that countries in Southeast Asia also have Zongzi?
Singapore
The local Chinese community celebrates the Dragon Boat Festival, and Zongzi can often be bought in supermarkets and food courts. In addition to traditional Fujian and Cantonese flavors, local versions such as Nyonya flavor and Southeast Asian spice Zongzi have also been developed.
Malaysia
It is especially popular in Chinese gathering places such as Penang and Kuala Lumpur. In addition to Chinese Zongzi, there are also very distinctive "Nyonya chang"—the skin is blue, the taste is sweet and fragrant, and it is a representative of the fusion of Baba Nyonya culture.
Thailand
The Thai Chinese community celebrates the Dragon Boat Festival. In Thai, Zongzi is called "บ๊ะจ่าง (Ba Chang)", a direct transliteration of the Chinese "肉粽". Bangkok's Chinatown is often very lively before and after the festival.
Vietnam
Vietnam has its own Dragon Boat Festival tradition, called "Tết Đoan Ngọ (Dragon Boat Festival)". It is not just a Chinese festival; many Vietnamese people also celebrate it. Local customs emphasize "pest control" and "disease prevention", and people eat fermented glutinous rice, sour fruits, and other foods.
Indonesia
The Chinese community still retains the Dragon Boat Festival culture, especially in places like Jakarta and Surabaya. Some places still retain dragon boat activities.
Philippines
The Chinese community celebrates, but on a relatively small scale. Some families of Fujian descent still retain the customs of wrapping Zongzi and ancestor worship.
